The Vale 7 way battle
The Vale 7 way battle was held last night (5th Feb 2021.) via Zoom. There were 63 members attending from the 7 clubs participating.
The judge for the evening was Harry Gardiner from Tenby who gave his comments and critique on the images which were in 2 categories - colour and mono.
We came a creditable joint second with Porthcawl & Pyle (Scoresheet attached). Well done to Kath Feltham and David Evans for getting top marks in the colour round.
A 20 was given for my “Urban Riot Squad” and picked up the Best Mono. The surprising thing is I entered this into our internal competition 10 years ago and the judge gave it a 17!
The reason I’m mentioning this is that the WPF Salon is open for entries so why not give it a try? Sometimes you’ve got to trust your own instinct and go with it. Here’s the link:
The Welsh Salon 2021 is now open for entries. The closing date is 7th March 2021.
You can enter here. You can find the rules here. The nature rules are here.
The three sections are:
1. Open Colour
2. Open Mono
3. Nature
The cost of entering the 2021 salon will be the same as last year.
This year, due to the exceptional environment, the Salon will be judged remotely. This gives us an unique opportunity to use three judges from outside Wales without having to fund their travelling and accommodation.
Cliff Emery (Salon Chairman).
Lastly, don’t forget to join us on Zoom on Monday, 8th Feb., 7.15pm (for 7.30pm start) for out 2-way Battle with Caerphilly. Link has already been sent to you.
Keep snapping if you can get out!
Kind Regards
Dave Norton (Comp. Sec)

CWM RHONDDA
PHOTOGRAPHY BATTLE Scores
This Saturday afternoon at 3pm the Rhondda Camera Club are hosting the Cwm Rhondda photography Battle.
For the 2nd year in a row, due to us being unable to invite locals clubs to our club house, we have gone online.
Following last years success of bringing clubs from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales together we have gone a step further and have 26 clubs from around the world.
It has been a big dream and a lot of hours of the committee organising and planning to make it happen.
This is a free event, anyone can join us on the YouTube link below and you will be able to see some impressive images hoping to win one of 3 Cwm Rhondda welsh slate trophies kindly sponsored by RLE Law.
So come along for some great entertainment and see a slideshow halftime to tracks of the Treorchy Male Voice Choir.

CWM RHONDDA PHOTOGRAPHY BATTLE
Rhondda Camera Club hosted our second annual 'Cwm Rhondda' battle with 26 clubs taking part. Clubs from all over the UK, Ireland and the Isle of Man were joined by 2 clubs from South Africa, 2 from the USA and 1 each from Canada and Malta. The judge was Leo Rich DPAGB, EFIAP/g, ARPS, Hon PAGB.
As last year, the entries were of a very high standard and this year the Trophy was won by Tenby Camera Club with 3 of their 4 images earning the maximum of 20 points from judge Leo Rich. The best Mono image was 'Orphanage' by Tenby's David Bolton. A terrific performance by Tenby Camera Club! Second were Catchlight CC from Belfast and third place was shared by Bridgend CC, Boston CC from the USA and Isle of Man PS. The trophy for best Colour Image was won by Mark Geldenhuys from the Camera Club of Johannesburg for 'Maximum Regret 321' a superb boxing photograph. All the named winners will receive a wonderful Welsh Slate trophy to keep.
The competition was broadcast live on YouTube (via Zoom) and fronted by Dawn Latcham as compere, Dave Norton as announcer and Les O’mahony as technical producer. Tasks they all excelled at!
After the first 2 rounds, the live audience was entertained by a slide show of images of the Rhondda Valley taken by RCC members with a musical backing by the Treorchy Male Choir.
Rhondda CC would like to say a big thank you to all the participating clubs for providing the superb images that made such a high quality competition possible, and to judge Leo Rich for his insightful critiques of all the photos.
We would also like to thank RLE Law, our sponsors for the event and Treorchy Male Choir for their kind permission to use their music.

Zoom battle. The hosts were
Pyle & Porthcawl camera club.

“Last night, I judged an organised Zoom battle. The hosts were Pyle & Porthcawl camera club.
Their were close on 40 people present, with some new faces to me, but also many familiar and friendly ones.
The banter was already started on my arrival into the room, this is not a bad thing, and takes away perhaps some tension that could build up.
I personally felt the standards were very high and I awarded several 20 pointers and numerous 19 pointers as well.
The oddity is having to discuss the images and offer a critique to you and your own Pc. (I'm sure if someone was able to see me from outside, could have considered I had lost the plot!)
Anyway, I enjoyed the varied images and had to pick one top image, this was in the end a sports image called "Dragons v Panthers" (see below).
It was taken at an ice hockey match in Cardiff, and the action shot was a great capture.
Excellent work, who's ever it was.
I believe the end result of the clubs was Bridgend winning by a one point margin. Well done to them.
(see score sheet attached below).
But more importantly well done for all the locals clubs joining and using the likes of Zoom to ensure we have some connectivity and light entertainment in the process.
These are strange and challenging times, and they seem to be carrying on as well.
We need some sort of distraction, to ensure we all remain sane. Thanks again to Heather for inviting me to judge, and I do hope the members of the clubs present enjoyed the evening.
I was delighted to play my small part as judge.
Stay safe everyone.
See you all again in the near future.
