Thank you for entering our Inter Club Projected Images Battle last night. We had a splendid entry from 12 WPF Clubs with some very fine images submitted. Thank you if you attended last night. We had an excellent turnout with over 60 people at our Clubhouse on the night. ( And thanks to you if you didn't turn up last night, as we ran out of chairs!!!!!!!).
Our thanks are due to the 2 excellent judges Peter Brisley and Sue O'Connell who gave a perceptive and entertaining appraisal of all 72 images.
Congratulations to Gwynfa Camera Club who won the Battle and to Bargoed Camera Club who were runners up.

“Bev’s Beautique Window Display Ferndale Rhondda
01 July 2018
The fourth Window Display to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the formation of The Rhondda Camera Club took place at, The Strand Ferndale between Friday 15th June and Monday 25th June 2018. The window given to us for the display was the largest that we have had the opportunity to use for our displays.
About 30 to 40 prints and notices were displayed, and the window drew much attention during this time. Some of the older inhabitants of Ferndale, remembered our founder John H Davies due to his Studio in the town for many years. A number of people called in to the shop hoping there would be more photos inside.
The members of the Rhondda Camera Club wish to thank the owner and staff of “Bev’s Beautique” for the use of the window and the welcome we were given during setting up and taking down the display.

Camera Club Window Display in Alpha Kitchens
09 March 2018
To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the formation of The Rhondda Camera Club, a display of members work has been exhibited in the shop window of “Alpha Kitchens” in Hannah Street, Porth.
This is our second display following that at “The Window Shop” in Treorchy in January of this year. The display in Porth will run from the 9th March until Monday 19th March. We are indebted to the owners of The Window Shop and Alpha Kitchens for their help.
We have endeavoured to display a number of photographs relevant to the area of the display.
We had some very favourable feedback about our first display at Treorchy; let’s hope the response at Porth is just as good. Certainly the interest shown by passers-by, while we were setting up the display, was encouraging. Our next window display is planned for
Tenovus in Tonypandy sometime in April or May. Members with photographs around and about this area please let us know well in advance as we have to make up labels showing the title and the name of the photographer. We hope to hold displays throughout the valleys during the year and anyone knowing of a friendly shopkeeper who would be prepared to help, please contact the committee. We especially would like to find a venue in Ferndale following the display in Tonypandy.

Rhondda Camera Club 75th anniversary
09 January 2018
This month sees the 75th anniversary of the conception of the Rhondda Camera Club. It came about due to the interest in photography of two friends John H. Davies of Llwynypia and Mr. Tom Jones of Tonypandy. They were joined by Mr. Walter Morgan M.A. of Treherbert an artist who was interested in learning how to use a camera and process the ensuing negatives into prints. John and Tom taught Walter the mechanics and he taught them about Composition, Texture and Light etc.
This all took place just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Others joined the trio over the next few years and it was decided to form a camera club. On January 11th 1943 the club was formed with J .J .Jones of the Bute Hotel, Treherbert as Chairman, Walter Morgan as Secretary, John H Davies as Treasurer with Tom Jones and three others as members of the committee.
The club did not meet for long at Treorchy. Circumstances compelled the club to move to a new meeting place at the headquarters of the Garrick Dramatic Society at Llwynypia.
A hard winter and restrictions on fuel, due to the war, made the accommodation less than hospitable with a member from Treorchy forced to bring down an oil stove that the membership gathered around to discuss their photographic interests and problems.
In 1946 the club were advised that the Maes-yr-Haf Educational Settlement in Trealaw with its well heated and comfortable premises would welcome the club, and it was here that the club would remain until after the 25th anniversary in 1968.
Since that time, the meeting place has changed on a number of occasions and also reverted back to the Maes-yr-Haf at times. The club has been at its present meeting place for some years now, only a few hundred yards from the Maes-yr-Haf.
At the time of the clubs 25th Anniversary in 1968, Exhibitions of members work were held at the Maes-yr-Haf over a period of five days and two at Tonypandy Library.
By the 50th Anniversary in 1998 the membership had of course changed on many occasions and the date or even the year of the clubs formation in 1943 was not known. With the members at that time unaware of the anniversary, no events were held to celebrate the formation of the club.
Fortunately, information became available about a year ago giving us the information we required. So for this, the 75th Anniversary, a series of displays and exhibitions are planned to take place in shop windows and library’s throughout the two Rhondda Valleys. The first of these was put in place on Friday 5th January 2018 at “The Window Shop”, Treorchy. It will run until Monday 15th January 2018. Match A Digi Winners
02 December 2017
Last night (1st December) was the annual Match a Digi competition between the Rhondda, Gwynfa and the Vale it was the Vale's turn to host the competition at Ystradowen.
There was a good turn out for the competition and it was good to see several members from our club there to give support to the least important yet most competitive competition of the year.
This years judge was Brian Coleman and as usual he dished out the points to what he felt was the closest match to the first image. The most bizarre images were displayed unlike the usual competitions that are held in inter club battles.
Team players for the club were David Norton, Mark Owen and Les Omahony. We even had a member on the Gwynfa team! This would be the last time Gwynfa will enter the competition as they have decided to drop it from their program.
Game over scores announced Rhondda were the winners! A good night was had by all and a big thanks to The Vale for a wonderful buffet and some amazing prizes in the raffle.
I would like to thank David Norton for giving his time in pulling together the images needed for this battle as it was left late for members to trawl their images for the unusual for entries.

REPORT ON THE VALE 7 WAY BATTLE AND ACE OF CLUBS COMP.
20 February 2017
On the night of Friday, 10th. Feb. the annual Vale 7 way battle took place at the Vale Camera Club. Rhondda were in good company with Gwynfa, Bridgend, The Vale, Pyle and Porthcawl and Morriston, all very competitive camera clubs.
The judge was Colin Harrison from over the water, and proved to be an excellent judge.
The first half of the competition involved the judging of 4 colour prints from each club and at the end of a close round Rhondda were in last position be it only by one point.
However, the second round, which consisted of the judging of 4 monochrome prints from each club, saw the fortunes of Rhondda turn around completely.
The selection committee, in their wisdom, had decided to enter the winning monochrome panel from the Walter Morgan Memorial Trophy competition straight into the Vale battle which proved to be a very successful decision as Rhondda won the monochrome round of the competition with a score of 78 points out of a possible 80.
That elevated Rhondda's position in the competition to second place behind Gwynfa.
Well done to all involved.

Print Work Shop Swansea
20 September 2016
“Flyer” to members of your Society which is details of a Workshop in Swansea being organised by John Campbell ([email protected]) of the Swansea Camera I am sending you a “Flyer” for a Workshop Fotospeed is doing for the SCC. I really enjoy these days as it can be more sociable and more contact with the members of the audience than my normal “Camera Club lectures) and is relaxed but hopefully informative aimed at all members of the audience getting a lot out of it.
This day is aimed at anyone who is interested in Prints or Printing but can be of interest to any photographers whether or not they do their own or have their images printed. There are four talks and can be interactive as the audience wishes.
John (Herlinger Fotospeed) starts the day with a talk on Colour Management which is something all photographers find useful
Then I (Margaret Salisbury) give a talk on Choosing the right paper for the image (this can be of use even if you have your pictures printed by a Printing firm such as John’s Fine art print room).
After lunch during which I will be happy to look at prints and give advice or opinion on them for whichever distinction the photographer would like to aim for, or even advice on entering Open Federation or International Exhibitions).
John will give a talk on Printing illustrated with images he has printed in the Print Room, mounting and framing, trouble shooting and help with anything anyone wants to know or help wanted.
Last talk is a general talk by me on my photography and this talk is always different to my normal “Sponsored Lectures” and “geared to” the audience I will be talking to.
I know this is short notice as the date is a week this Saturday (1st October) but a few people have had to drop out and John (Campbell) is looking ideally to fill a few more places on this workshop so I offered to send out to my address list. I apologise if I have picked on your club and its too far to travel or members not able to come but would be very grateful if you could let your Members know about it “just in case” someone would like a place on this workshop – full details attached.
Kind regards
Margaret (Salisbury, FRPS,MFIAP,

Rhondda Camera Club’s Shooting Star
01 July 2016
On Tuesday junior member Jamie Woodhouse-Wright was presented with his trophy for the youngest member to obtain a first and a third in the same club competition. Jamie who is just 14 years of age saw off the most experienced members of the club. Judge Ian Munro was impressed when he found out about Jamie.
Jamie was also successful last year in obtaining an entry in the Rhondda Calendar 2016, which has gone on publication throughout South Wales and beyond.
Look out the 2016-17 Season where Jamie will no doubt be entering and hopefully doing well in internal and external battles being the youngest member.

A GUIDE TO PLAGIARISM AND THEFT IN PHOTOGRAPHY
13 February 2016
In 2013 my most popular article (by some distance) was the story of how my most successful image was plagiarised in a rather unusual way; a photographer had recreated the image from scratch. It seemed to me to be a bit of a grey area and I was unsure where I stood legally http://www.diyphotography.net/a-guide-to-plagiarism-and-theft-in-photography/

RCC Outing
26 September 2015
Last night members of RCC were joined by a few Gwynfa Camera Club members and we had an enjoyable evening light painting. Personally, I had never heard of this before although I had seen photos of swirls of light and wondered how it was done.
Well, Carl organised the trip and we were off to Ogmore for the evening. I asked if I should bring anything along. I was told to bring my kit and a few odd items. Not wanting to seem dim I packed my kit with a few extras. Armed with my camera, tripod, head torch a whisk and a dogs lead I waited patiently for my lift full of excitement of the unknown. We arrived at Ogmore and the sky was ablaze, a proper Autumn sunset but we weren't here for this beautiful sight were waiting for the moon to rise. In preparation, while the sun was still lighting the skies and the moon was just showing itself over the distant tree tops Les decided it was time to get the gear out. Opening his car boot we knew he meant business. Out came the fairy lights, whisks, dog leads and wire wool. He even had tape in case everything fell apart! There was one secret ingredient and, in the darkness Carl headed off behind the wall of the castle as we busied ourselves with getting our cameras at the ready. With everyone waiting with baited breath, would it work? Then out of the darkness came Carl like a bat out of hell. Swinging his arm as fast as he could filling the entrance of the castle with sparks glowing, lighting up the archway with a whisk full of lit wire wool. Exposures at 20 seconds doesn't sound like a long time but when we were taking several shots Carl's arm soon got weary. Time to get out the fairy lights! We took it in turns to run around the grounds swinging them in circles and dragging them on the floor while others were poised with their fingers on the camera release buttons hoping for the perfect shot. I really didn't think I would get much of a shot but we were having immense fun. By 10pm we were cold and not a cup of tea between us so it was time to pack up and head to the pub to talk about the night and the next expedition....Personally, I am hoping for something warmer next time, if not I will remember to add a flask of tea!
There is a photo in my folder on the gallery - see if you can spot Carl.

Chalkie Davies Exhibition at Cardiff Museum
26 July 2015
You may be interested (if you haven't seen it already) in an excellent exhibition that is currently on in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. It is an exhibition of photographs by Welsh born photographer Chalkie Davies. Chalkie was, for many years staff photographer at the New Musical Express, and most of the photographs (all in monochrome) are of artists and bands from the seventies and eighties including David Bowie, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and many more. It is open every day until early September, and well worth a visit if you rocked through that era (and can remember doing so, of course!!!}. Find out more on www.museumwales.ac.uk/cardiff .
